Tips for Pursuing an On-Campus Job at CMU
Contact departments directly!
You contact departments directly and they will let you know how to apply for their positions.
Very often instructions on how to apply are listed on the job posting.  If you are calling or walking into a department to inquire about a job, always ask for the person who does the hiring of student employees.

Check out the job postings on the Student Employment Services websitehttp://blogs-images.forbes.com/nextavenue/files/2012/12/top_10_career_tips_of_2012_142327423.jpg at http://ses.cmich.edu.

Click on CURRENT VACANT POSITIONS.  (International students can apply for GSA positions only).  These postings can change often.  Take a moment each day to review them.  Do not hesitate to approach a department you would like to work for even if they do not have a job posting on the SES site.  Do not hesitate to approach 10 or 12 or even 15 departments!

Create a
resume.

You may not have a lot of work experience, but create a resume anyway.  List the jobs, volunteer positions, extracurricular activities and the skills you can bring to the table.  Keep it simple.  Use white paper and black ink and make sure there are no misspellings.

Don't assume departments will contact you after you have applied.
Assume after a reasonable amount of time has passed that you will need to contact them to inquire about the status of your application.  (7 to 10 days seems reasonable.)

Let employers know if you are going to be in the area during CMU's vacation periods.
Many employers are looking for student employees who are available to work during vacation periods.

Will you be attending Central Michigan University for 3, 4 or 5 years?
Let CMU employers know this, too.  Employers prefer to spend their time training employees who will be around for a few years.

Be persistent!
Don't give up seeking that on-campus position you would really like to have.  Prospective employers will appreciate (and remember) your eagerness and enthusiasm.
