Alexandra Mauro, 2013 graduate of Troy, was featured in the May issue of Seventeen magazine as one of their “Super Interns.” Following her successful internship last summer with Madwood Media in New York City, Mauro shared with readers a choice she made to step up on the job. As a result of that decision, she was given more trust and responsibility from her bosses.
Mauro has three tips to help students make the most of internships this summer:
- Be persistent – in pursuing internship opportunities and on the job. Never say ‘I hope to talk to you’ in follow-up letters, say ‘I look forward to talking to you.’
On the job, don’t wait for assignments. This is your opportunity to get experience in your field. Get involved.
- Be willing. Be humble. As an intern, you must remember no job is beneath you. Be ready and willing to step up to do anything. You never know where it will lead.
- Be confident. You can do more than you think. Don’t ever say ‘I don’t know how.’ Say yes to the opportunity, be resourceful and ask questions … you are capable of far more than you think.
