Michigan Department of Education Reading Course Requirement for Teachers

As of July 1, 2009, an additional reading course was added as a requirement to advance from a Provisional Teaching Certificate (issued to a beginning teacher) to a Professional Teaching Certificate in the State of Michigan. A teacher must now complete an additional 3 semester credit hour course in reading focused on the diagnosis and remediation of reading difficulties.

Central Michigan University has several state-approved options to meet this new reading requirement.

Please Note: The EDU reading courses adhere to the graduate course rate of Central Michigan University and not the Professional Development course rate.

Elementary teachers* may choose between:

EDU 603 (3 credit hours) Elementary Diagnosis, Remediation, and Differentiation of Reading Instruction
EDU 632 (6 credit hours) Practicum in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficulties in Literacy
EDU 533 (3 credit hours) Diagnosis and Treatment of Reading Difficulties

*The elementary option should be taken by teachers with an elementary certification who teach grade levels K-5 all subjects, K-8 in a self-contained classroom and their major and/or minor grade levels are 6-8.

Secondary teachers may choose between:

EDU 606 (3 credit hours) Secondary Advanced Reading Diagnosis and Instruction
EDU 632 (6 credit hours) Practicum in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficulties in Literacy

This additional reading course is required of all teachers going from provisional to professional teacher certification in Michigan; however, it is not the only requirement to apply for professional teacher certification.
