CMU Libraries play an important role in supporting research and instructional activities for faculty and students. The library holds more than 1.7 million physical and electronic materials in a variety of formats, languages, and subjects for all disciplines.
The CMU Libraries have purchased over 671,000 print titles and over 709,000 ebooks, which can be searched using Library Smart Search.
The CMU Libraries provide access to over 200 online databases. Users can access these databases by disciplinary subjects or an A-Z list.
With over 9,300 print volumes and access to over 114,000 electronic serial titles, the CMU Libraries has a large collection of journals to support the research and teaching needs of users.

The CMU Libraries provide access to numerous online reference resources including dictionaries, encyclopedias, and handbooks, which can be accessed by using these databases, Library Smart Search, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Oxford Reference, Oxford Handbooks Online,Issues and Controversies, Opposing Viewpoints in Context, etc.
Betty A McDonald Children’s Collection
The Betty A. McDonald Children’s Literature Collection consists of over 25,000 volumes of outstanding works for young people. The collection consists of picture books as well as fiction and nonfiction books for children and young adults. The collection is located on the 4th floor of Park Library. Many of the books contained in the collection are award-winning titles of prestigious children’s literature prizes such as the Caldecott, Newberry, and Coretta Scott King awards. Clarke Historical Library
The Clarke Historical Library collects, preserves, and promotes
nationally recognized collections including materials on the history of
Michigan and the Old Northwest Territory, the history of Central
Michigan University, children's literature, campaign biographies of
United States presidential candidates, the history of angling, and
historic Michigan newspapers.
CMU Scholarly and creative works
CMU Scholarly and Creative Works is an online repository currently providing open access to 1,130 CMU Graduate Research (These and Dissertations), 61 CMU Undergraduate Research, and 202 CMU Faculty/Staff Research.
The Central Michigan University Art Collection has over 700 unique works of art created by alumni and nationally recognized artists, and new acquisitions are continually added. The works are displayed throughout the campus and range from monumental sculptures to prints, paintings, fiber art, ceramics and drawings. Artworks are exhibited throughout Park Library, which is steward to the majority of the collection.
The CMU Library has been a selective government documents depository library since 1958 and provides access to more than 500,000 publications of the United States government. Our collection consists of print, microform, and online items. Users can use Library Smart Search and GPO Monthly Catalog to access the collection.
CMU Libraries provide access to major legal resources through 2 databases Westlaw and HeinOnline. Remote access to these databases is limited to individuals with a CMU email address.
The CMU Libraries also maintain a collection of music scores. This collection includes over 7,700 physical scores available on the 4th floor of Park Library, as well as electronic scores accessible through Smart Search. For more information on music scores, please see this
Open access is a term for barrier-free online access to scholarly literature. The CMU Libraries promote the use of quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals by inserting open access journal titles into the CMU library catalog Library Smart Search—thereby increasing the visibility of these journals. Users can search for open access publications from a variety of sources: SmartSearch, Web of Science, Directory of Open Access Journals, or ROAD.
