Collection Development

Overview

Collection Development is the department in the Library that works with the academic faculty to select books, periodical subscriptions, media, music, art and software for the libraries’ collections. The department is made up of the Director of Collection Development and subject librarians.

Mission

The primary mission of the department is to select resources that best support the teaching and research needs of the CMU community. Subject librarians with subject expertise work with departmental faculty to determine what the appropriate library resources are and submit orders for them. The secondary mission of the department is to train faculty and students to use the resources of the library. They do this by offering training at department meetings, teaching information literacy and library research methods in individual classes or in the one-credit LIB 197 course, as well as answering in-depth reference questions in their areas of expertise.
