Focus on global learning at CMU

Campus community invited to provide feedback on self-study and strategic plan

​To get ready for an upcoming American Council on Education internationalization peer review visit, the Central Michigan University Internationalization Strategic Planning Committee is inviting feedback on its self-study and strategic plan.

The strategic plan includes increasing student participation in study abroad, recruiting international students and faculty, fostering globally engaged research and creative endeavors, and engaging with the city of Mount Pleasant's International Relations Council. It is modeled after CMU's own strategic plan, Advancing Excellence.

"Having a robustly internationalized campus heightens our academic mission and the university's visibility and prestige," said Christine Brookes, interim associate dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, who serves with David Ash as co-chair of the committee. "Our alumni, faculty, staff and students will be better equipped to actively and responsibly participate in and influence a global Michigan and the world beyond."

Students, faculty and staff may review results of the self-study and the draft strategic plan documents and provide feedback through a link on the page or by attending one of three open forums in the Bovee University Center:

  • Noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Gold Room.
  • 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, April 20, in the Lake Huron Room.
  • 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the Lake Huron Room.

The ACE peer review visit will take place April 30-May 2.

A comprehensive, universitywide effort

CMU was one of 11 institutions of higher education to join the Internationalization Laboratory for the 2016-2018 cohort.

Brookes noted the planning committee represents each college, student organizations and administrative departments, including the Office of International Affairs and Enrollment and Student Services.

"The university is renewing its multifaceted strategic plan to better prepare students to live and work in a multicultural and connected world. This commitment to build global awareness needs to infuse everything we do on campus," Brookes said.
