CMU Academic Organizational Review committees complete first phase

Recommendations are posted; feedback sessions scheduled

​Three committees guiding Central Michigan University's academic organizational review have wrapped up the first phase of their work. The committees have worked since October to review proposals submitted from across campus. Their recommendations for how the university should proceed with these proposals are now posted to the website for review.

"The three committees have all worked very well together over the past several months," said Ian Davison, senior vice provost for academic reorganization. "The next steps after these recommendations are posted is to gather feedback from the CMU community."

Davison said the reports describe the basis for the committees' recommendations. The subsequent steps in the review process will be concluded by April in time for final approval by the Board of Trustees in June.

Gathering feedback

The CMU community will have several opportunities to provide feedback on the committees' recommendations. These include:

  • Feedback sessions scheduled for Feb. 7 and 8 are open to faculty, staff and students. They will be facilitated by Carol Cartwright, president emeritus of Kent State University.   • Anonymous comments submitted online.
  • Meetings with stakeholder groups, including Academic Senate, Council of Deans, Council of Chairs and SGA, which will take place throughout February.

Individuals and groups also are encouraged to request a meeting with one of the committees to discuss recommendations.

Developing the recommendations

To develop the recommendation reports, several items were reviewed and discussed by the committees. These included:

  • Input and suggestions from across the campus community, as received through open forums;  conversations between faculty, staff and students and members of the committees; meetings with various groups; anonymous suggestions received online and through a survey of undergraduate students.
  • External and internal data such as data on peer institutions and from student exit surveys, as provided by the Office of Institutional Research.
  • Reorganization proposals submitted by departments and colleges across campus.
  • Responses to proposals from colleges and departments. Several responses were received for committee I, and, according to Davison, one response was received for committee II.

The committees conducted a qualitative evaluation of suggestions and formal proposals in the context of the CMU 2017-22 strategic plan imperatives. They also considered factors such as cost and the feedback of faculty, staff and students who may be affected.

"The committee reports are intended as a summary of recommendations together with a rationale for each," Davison said. "They are not a forensic analysis of the decision-making process, nor do they discuss proposals that were considered but ultimately not supported by the committees."

In some cases, proposals were rejected because they were outside the scope of the organizational review. Those proposals have been forwarded to the appropriate administrators for possible action.

"The suggestions and proposals submitted as part of the institutional review make it clear that there is a wealth of untapped expertise and ingenuity across the university that should be harnessed to facilitate progress," Davison said.

Next steps

For committee I, departments and colleges will be formally notified of any changes to recommendations by Feb. 23. Then, between March 12 and April 20, votes will take place at the department and college levels, followed by final reports being developed and sent to the provost and president. The Board of Trustees will approve recommendations affecting departments and colleges at their meeting in June.

For committees II and III, reports will be revised based on feedback by March 16 with final reports then being sent to the provost and president.
