Approve list of May graduates, funding for SAC pool remodeling

The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees will meet Thursday and Friday to take action on items ranging from approving the list of prospective May graduates to setting tuition for the next academic year.

With commencement less than two weeks away, trustees will be asked to approve a list of nearly 3,500 students who will graduate. That number includes almost 2,450 baccalaureate degrees, 865 master's degrees and 76 doctoral degrees. Commencement ceremonies will be held Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7.

Trustees will discuss and adopt tuition rates for the 2016-17 academic year for undergraduate and graduate students along with room and board rates.

CMU has been the first university in the state to set tuition for the last four years to help parents and students in budgeting for the upcoming year. The university has had the lowest cumulative tuition increase among all state universities the past six years.

Other items on the board's agenda include:

  • A resolution approving a nine-year, $25 million contract for electricity. CMU is negotiating a multiyear deal because electric rates are expected to continue to rise after Consumers Energy and Detroit Edison close nine coal plants in Michigan later this year;
  • Additional funding of $465,000 to repair the SAC pool. That will bring the total cost of the project to $2.7 million. The 25-year-old pool needs extensive upgrading and will be closed from July 25 through the end of the year for the work to be completed; and
  • Receive an update on the Online Academic Program Committee's work. Trustees asked that CMU look at ways to expand its online class offerings, and the OAPC will outline where they are at in the process.

The meeting, open to the public, begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the President's Conference Room of the Bovee University Center.
