Central Michigan University will host the state's top high school wrestling teams Feb. 26 and 27 during the Michigan High School Athletic Association Team Wrestling State Championships.
CMU won a highly-competitive bid to host the two-day tournament, which includes the top eight teams in each of the four divisions. Competition will take place in the CMU Events Center, with quarterfinals Friday and semifinals and finals Saturday.
"We are delighted to host the MHSAA Team Wrestling Championships on our campus and in our community," said Stan Shingles, CMU assistant vice president for University Recreation. "This is a great opportunity to engage the Mount Pleasant community, and the entire state of Michigan, with CMU's championship environment."
The CMU Events Center is one of the top wrestling facilities in the country, with a three-mat practice facility and auxiliary gymnasium just steps away from the McGuirk Arena competition floor. CMU has a strong wrestling tradition, finishing 10 times in the top 15 nationally and capturing 15 Mid-American Conference titles.
"We worked hard to bring this tournament to mid-Michigan and are committed to creating a first-class event for the MHSAA staff, teams, families and friends," said Cal Seelye, CMU's executive director of auxiliary services.
