Lane Demas, faculty member in the Central Michigan University history department, was awarded the 2017 Herbert Warren Wind Book Award by the United States Golf Association for his book “Game of Privilege: An African-American History of Golf.”
The USGA’s top literary prize recognizes outstanding contributions to golf literature and is presented by the USGA Golf Museum.
Demas’ book explores the history of African-Americans through the game of golf.
He received the award Feb. 3, 2018, during the USGA annual meeting in Miami, Florida, and was interviewed for the USGA website.
“‘Game of Privilege’ is a well-written and thoroughly researched history of African-Americans in the game of golf, an aspect of the history of the game badly in need of a comprehensive account,” said Hilary Cronheim, special collections librarian at the USGA.
In addition to his teaching, Demas is the editor of The Michigan Historical Review, a twice-yearly scholarly publication.
