Two CMU faculty members will take part in the Shannxi Symphony Orchestra’s honorary centennial concert on Nov. 4 in celebration of American composer Leonard Bernstein.

“This is the very first international concert collaboration between the CMU School of Music and the Shannxi Symphony Orchestra,” Fangye Sun, School of Music faculty member, said.

Sun will perform as guest concertmaster, leading the first violin section of the company.

José-Luis Maúrtua will take the role of guest conductor, guiding 80 musicians through the performance for over 1,000 people.

Sun and Maúrtua also will host a master class and seminar for Xi’an Conservatory students during their residency in Xi’an, China.

Sun explained that after visiting CMU’s campus, the Shannxi Symphony Orchestra’s president and vice president expressed interest in doing a collaboration of this nature and invited the two faculty members to take on these prestigious roles.
