Central Michigan University Executive Vice President and Provost Michael Gealt was appointed interim president this afternoon during a special meeting of the Board of Trustees.

"Provost Gealt has the experience to ensure CMU stays the course in delivering a high-quality education and supports students extraordinarily well as the university prepares for and begins the fall semester," Weideman said. "It's important we have someone in the presidential role at all times to make sure our daily operations run smoothly."

Gealt became provost at CMU in August 2013. He has a Ph.D. in microbiology and has conducted research in environmental microbiology. Prior to CMU, he served as dean of the College of Science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

He is on the Board of Directors for CMU Medical Education Partners. He also is on the team developing plans to increase the health education professional pipeline as part of the THRIVE project — a collaboration between the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance Inc. and Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the EAST Initiative in Little Rock, Arkansas, an organization that supports STEM education in more than 240 K-12 schools.

"I look forward to continuing the strong collaboration with faculty and staff across the university during the coming weeks," Gealt said. "Central Michigan University is at a time of great momentum. It is a privilege to support the university and campus community as interim president."

President George E. Ross announced in January that he would be stepping down from his leadership role, effective Tuesday, July 31.
