Central Michigan University faculty, staff, students, alumni, colleges and departments regularly receive accolades and honors. Here's a roundup of recognition highlighted in the past month.

CMU names Staff Excellence honorees

The CMU community is celebrating 14 employees as 2019-20 Staff Excellence Award honorees for their outstanding service to the university and its students. You can read brief Q&A's with the winners here.

Engineering technology programs accredited

The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology has added CMU's mechanical engineering technology and industrial engineering technology programs to its list of accredited programs.

The two programs join the growing list of ABET-accredited programs at CMU that already include the computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering programs.

Handmade mask project passes the test

School of Health Sciences faculty member Lana Ivanitskaya developed an international partnership to scientifically design, hand-make and distribute face masks to protect against COVID-19 infection.

Now Ivanitskaya is happy to report the masks performed as well as commercially available masks in a CMU-funded study by Stanford University and World Health Organization researchers. The masks' three layers filter at least as well as recently tested commercially available masks. They also are more breathable than the best commercial mask tested, which likely contributes to mask wearing compliance.

Emeritus faculty member joins Broadcasting Hall of Fame

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters has inducted emeritus faculty member William "Rick" Sykes into the Michigan Broadcasting Hall of Fame and presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

"We are very proud of Rick and his many contributions to our college, CMU and the broadcasting field," said Elizabeth Kirby, interim dean of the College of the Arts and Media. Sykes is credited with helping scores of future broadcasters get their start.

Honoring love of CMU in action

They are seven of a kind — six individuals and one organization whose common trait is love and support for CMU. They are 2020 National Alumni Awards honorees.

This year's award winners are Robert Barclay, Kaitlyn Coons, Rachael Moreno, Laurie Morris, Dr. Gene Ragland, Kala Wilburn and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
