Katie Dowd, a visual art education major from Birch Run, Michigan, has been awarded the Teacher of Promise Award by the Network of Michigan Educators.
"Teaching art is what I have wanted to do since grade school. I am looking forward to landing my first teaching job and sharing my passion for the arts with my students," Dowd said. "Reflecting on my time at Central Michigan University, I have grown as a person and future art educator thanks to Dr. Ren Hullender and the opportunities he provided me. It is an honor and very humbling to be recognized by the professors who have shared their talents with me."
As a student, Dowd has been extensively involved in community-based art, art education and volunteer projects. She has helped design community murals for Art Reach of Mid Michigan, created art classes through an internship at Art Reach and coordinated March to College Day, an event bringing eighth-graders to CMU's campus to experience the life of a college student.
Dowd expects to graduate with honors in May and hopes to start teaching in the fall.
