Central Michigan University hosts more than 500 events each year, many of which are free and open to the public. Highlighted events from Thursday, Feb. 6, to Wednesday, Feb. 12, include:

 

Valentine’s for Veterans

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, to Monday, Feb. 10, in the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center, Bovee University Center 106

Free and open to the public

Students, faculty, staff and community members can stop by the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center to make Valentine’s Day cards for veterans across the state. Materials will be provided.

 

Faculty Jazz Combo

8 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall

Free and open to the public

This event kicks off the 41st Annual CMU Jazz Weekend. Faculty members who are performing include Jeff Kressler, piano; Andrew Spencer, drums; John Nichol, saxophone; Rob Smith, trumpet; Edward Fedewa, bass; and Robert Lindahl, trombone.

 

Pink Goes Red

7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in the Student Activity Center Small Sports Forum

Free and open to the public

Sigma Lambda Gamma and Delta Sigma Theta will host a free Zumba class to support the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day. Attendees are encouraged to wear red. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

 

Guest Artist: Frank Tiberi, saxophone

8 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors

CMU Jazz Weekend presents Frank Tiberi, saxophone, the current leader of the Woody Herman Orchestra. He plays the alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet, flute, and the bassoon. Tickets are available for purchase at the Central Box Office by calling 989-774-3000 or at the door.

 

Show Me Your Zodiac

7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium

Tickets are $10 in advance or $13 at the door. VIP tickets are available for $15 and include a meet and greet with Earlly Mac, refreshments, early admission, VIP seating, private shopping with vendors and grab bags.

The Organization for Black Unity presents “Show me your Zodiac,” the 14th Annual Fashion Show. The inaugural Hair Show will be presented by K. Nicole. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The VIP meet and greet starts at 5:30 p.m.

 

Black History Month Food Taster

5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Bovee University Center Rotunda

$5 for the public and $3 for students

Attendees will enjoy a variety of food while Comedian Willie Lynch Jr. performs.

 

CMU Orchestra

8 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall

Free and open to the public

The CMU Orchestra, the student-based orchestral ensemble serving the university community, will perform.

 

Character of Liberty

8 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Park Library Auditorium

Free and open to the public

Larry Reed, president of the Foundation for Economic Education, will speak about liberty. Reed is president emeritus of the Mackinac Center.

 

Tunes at Noon: Kevin and Marco

Noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Bovee University Center Student Lounge

Free and open to the public

1892 Productions will host Kevin and Marco, local music talent, to perform live during the lunch hour.

 

Purpose of Life

5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Education and Human Services Building 118

Free and open to the public

The Muslim Students’ Association at CMU will host guest speaker Sheikh Yusuf Estes for a presentation titled “Purpose of Life.” Estes is an American Muslim preacher who was the delegate to the United Nations World Peace Conference and was named the 2013 Islamic Personality of the Year at the Dubai International Holy Quran Award. Food and beverages will be provided.

 

Plates of Pleasant

7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, Bovee University Center Rotunda

Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the door

The Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center will host Plates of Pleasant to help support Alternative Breaks. The event provides a taste of all the restaurants around Mount Pleasant.
