​​​Central Michigan University hosts more than 500 events each year, many of which are free and open to the public. Highlighted events from Thursday, Jan. 29, to Wednesday, Feb. 4, include:

Language Arts Advising Night — Thursday

Central Michigan University’s English Language and Literature department will host a Language Arts Advising Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Education and Human Services Building Room 231. Contact Susan Griffith, 989-774-3146.

Faculty artist Brad DeRoche concert — Thursday

Central Michigan University’s School of Music guitarist Brad DeRoche will perform in concert from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall. Purchase tickets through CMU Ticket Central, 989-774-3045.

Central Michigan University surplus sale — Friday

Central Michigan University will sell surplus items including equipment, furniture and supplies to the public from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the Surplus Sales Building, 275 W. Bellows St. Call 989-774-3917.

Sibs Weekend — Friday through Sunday

Central Michigan University’s Student Activities and Involvement office will host a weekend of fun for siblings of CMU students from Friday through Sunday. Contact Jeanette Smith, 989-774-3016.

Teaching and Learning Collective conference — Friday

Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching will host a free conference, The TLC Responds to Barbara Oakley, from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in Bovee University Center Room 221. “Rethinking South Africa’s HIV/AIDS Epidemic” geography seminar — Friday

Central Michigan University’s geography department and Cultural and Global Studies program will host Abigail Neely from the University of Minnesota for a “Rethinking South Africa’s HIV/AIDS Epidemic through Gogo Mtembu’s Case of Tuberculosis” seminar from noon to 1 p.m. Friday in Dow Science Complex Room 270. Eastern Michigan University Dual men’s track and field meet — Friday

The Central Michigan University Chippewas will host the Eastern Michigan University Eagles for a men’s track and field meet at 3 p.m. Friday in Mount Pleasant. Call 989-774-3041.

Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan women’s track and field meet — Friday

The Central Michigan University Chippewas will host the Eastern Michigan University Eagles and the Western Michigan University Broncos for a women’s track and field meet at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Mount Pleasant. Call 989-774-3041.

Institute of Play conference — Saturday and Sunday

Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, College of Education and Human Services, and the Faculty Center for Innovative Teaching will host a conference with guest facilitators from the Institute of Play from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday in the Powers Hall Ballroom. Ohio vs. Central Michigan University women’s basketball game — Saturday

CMU Speaker Series presents author Richard Preston — Monday

Comedian Chris James performance — Tuesday

New Venture Competition workshop — Wednesday

The College of Business Administration’s Institute for Entrepreneurship at Central Michigan University will host a New Venture Competition workshop, “Stop, Evaluate Your Position, Pivot if Necessary,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday in Grawn Hall 150. Contact Brenda Pung, 989-774-3270.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser — Wednesday

Central Michigan University’s Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates will host a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Activity Center to raise awareness of sexual aggression issues. Registration is $5 per person or $15 per team of four or more. Contact Amanda Hoag.

Bowling Green vs. Central Michigan University men’s basketball game — Wednesday
