Central Michigan University hosts more than 500 events each year, many of which are free and open to the public. Highlighted events from Thursday, Jan. 30, to Wednesday, Feb. 5, include:

 

January Social Justice Film Series: “American Teacher”

7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, Bovee University Center 21, Student Lounge

Free and open to the public

In honor of January as National Mentoring Month, the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center is hosting a one-time showing of the social justice film “American Teacher.” The film involves weaving interviews of policy experts and startling facts about the lives and careers of four teachers and tells the collective story by and about those closest to the issues in the educational system.

 

Faculty Artist: Neil Mueller, trumpet

8 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors

Faculty artist Neil Mueller, trumpet, will perform. He holds a bachelor of music degree from Concordia College and a doctor of musical arts degree from Boston University, as well as a master of music degree from Yale School of Music. Tickets are available for purchase at the Central Box Office by calling 989-774-3000 or at the door.

 

Alternative Breaks Midnight Skate

11:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Isabella County ICE Arena, 5165 E. Remus Rd.

$4 with own skates and $5 to rent

The Volunteer Center will host a midnight skate at the ICE Arena to help support the Alternative Spring Break trip in March. There will be skating, grilled cheese sandwiches and penny wars at the event.

 

Mentoring Month Postcards

Thursday, Jan. 30, to Friday, Jan. 31, in the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center Bovee University Center Room 106

Free and open to the public

The Volunteer Center will have postcards available in the office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 30 and 31 for students, faculty, staff and community members. These postcards can be filled out and sent to mentors. Postage will be covered by the Volunteer Center. 

 

Faculty Artist: Tracy Watson, mezzo-soprano

8 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors

Faculty artist Tracey Watson, mezzo-soprano, will perform. She is a concert performer, having sung concert repertoire and recitals in Europe and the United States. Tickets are available for purchase at the Central Box Office by calling 989-774-3000 or at the door.
