Central Michigan University hosts more than 500 events each year, many of which are free and open to the public. Highlighted events from Thursday, Oct. 2, to Wednesday, Oct. 8, include:

Teaching and Learning Collective workshops with Barbara Oakley — Thursday and Friday

Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences will host speaker Barbara Oakley for the free talks of “STEM and Women” at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Bovee University Center Room 302, “Learning How to Learn” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium and “Teaching Quantitative Reasoning” at 9 a.m. Friday in the Bovee University Center Room 221. Guest lecture by alumnus and physician Jay Dean — Thursday

Central Michigan University’s College of Science and Technology will host CMU alumnus and University of South Florida medical professor Jay Dean for a free guest lecture titled “Your Body in Flight During World War II: The Beginnings of Space Medicine” at 7 p.m. Thursday in Park Library Auditorium. WMHW-FM 91.5 Alumni Takeover — Friday and Saturday

Central Michigan University’s alumni relations office and School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts will feature alumni on WMHW-FM 91.5 from 6 a.m. Friday through midnight Saturday in celebration of homecoming weekend.

Guest lecture by psychologist Russell Matthews — Friday

Central Michigan University’s psychology department will host Bowling Green State University psychology professor Russell Matthews for a free guest lecture titled “Adaptation at Work: It’s All a Matter of Time” at noon Friday in Grawn Hall 118. McNair Scholars fall research symposium — Friday

The College of Graduate Studies at Central Michigan University will host its annual McNair Scholars fall research symposium at 1 p.m. Friday in Park Library Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. Call Kim Whitney at 989-774-1364 for more information.

Central Michigan University Latino/a Alumni Chapter panel discussion — Friday

Central Michigan University’s Latino/a Alumni Chapter and alumni relations office will host a free Latino/a alumni panel discussion at 2 p.m. Friday in Moore Hall 105 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. A CMU Career Services representative also will discuss services available to students.

Jerry Henderson Radio Complex dedication ceremony — Friday

Central Michigan University’s School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts will dedicate its two-station radio complex in honor of emeritus professor Jerry Henderson at 3 p.m. Friday in Moore Hall’s Townsend Kiva Lobby. The Central Michigan University Chippewas will host game No. 1 of the Fall World Series Classic at 3:05 p.m. Friday in Mount Pleasant. Call 989-774-3041 for more information.

Rock Rally — Friday

Central Michigan University’s alumni relations office will host a free pep rally and mock rock contest at 7 p.m. Friday in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium in celebration of homecoming weekend. The Chippewa football team will be presented, and the 2014 homecoming Gold Ambassadors will be announced.

Central Michigan University Volunteer Center chapter meeting — Friday

Staff from the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center at Central Michigan University will host their annual constituency chapter meeting from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday in the Bovee University Center Room 106. “Miles for Medals” fundraising 5K run/walk — Saturday

Special Olympics Michigan will host a "Miles for Medals" fundraising 5K run/walk on Saturday. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Finch Fieldhouse for an 8 a.m. start. Call Erin Dougherty at 989-774-3911 for more information.

Class of 1964 Reunion/Alumni Continental Breakfast — Saturday

Central Michigan University's alumni relations office will host a complimentary continental breakfast for alumni and members of the graduating class of 1964 at 9 a.m. Saturday outside Powers Hall.

Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services homecoming reception — Saturday

Central Michigan University's recreation, parks and leisure services administration department staff invite all program alumni to a homecoming breakfast reception from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Finch Fieldhouse's Adventure Center. Call Suzanne Gareiss at 989-774-5095 to RSVP.

Homecoming parade — Saturday

Central Michigan University will host its 90th annual homecoming parade at 11 a.m. Saturday. The parade will begin in Lot 22 and travel through campus before heading north on Main Street to downtown Mount Pleasant. All are invited to attend.

Volunteer Center reception/pretailgate party — Saturday

Staff from the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center at Central Michigan University will host a reception and pretailgate party beginning at noon Saturday in the Bovee University Center Room 106 in celebration of homecoming weekend. All are invited to attend.

“Alumni Village” celebration — Saturday

Central Michigan University's alumni relations office will host a free, campus wide celebration at "Alumni Village" near Rose Ponds beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in celebration of CMU's Homecoming weekend. WMHW-FM alumni will broadcast live on location. All are invited to attend.

Cardboard Boat Race across Rose Ponds — Saturday

Central Michigan University’s School of Engineering and Technology will host its 17th annual Cardboard Boat Race at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose Ponds near Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences will host His Arms Children’s Project co-founder and director Florence Oyosi for a free talk “Educating and Caring for the Orphaned Children of Rural Kenya” at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Park Library Auditorium. Central Michigan University’s Multicultural Academic Student Services office will host a theatrical performance of “N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk: The Race Play” as part of Hispanic Heritage Month to raise cultural awareness and acceptance at 7 p.m. in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium. State of the University address and reception — Wednesday

Central Michigan University’s president’s office will host a State of the University address at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium.
