​Central Michigan University hosts more than 500 events each year, many of which are free and open to the public. Highlighted events from Thursday, Sept. 11, to Wednesday, Sept. 17, include:

“From the Ground Up” documentary showing — Thursday

The Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center at Central Michigan University will play “From the Ground Up,” a 30-minute documentary about 9/11 events, at 3:30 p.m. in the Bovee University Center lounge.

Faculty musician Alan Gumm presentation — Thursday

Central Michigan University’s School of Music Professor Alan Gumm will deliver a free presentation, “Exploring the Multiple Functions of Music Conducting,” featuring his sabbatical research at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Music Building’s Chamichian Hall.

New Venture Competition Ideation Boot Camp meeting  — Friday

The College of Business Administration at Central Michigan University will host an Ideation Boot Camp meeting about the 2015 CMU New Venture Competition at 1 p.m. Friday in Grawn Hall 150. Contact Brenda Pung at 989-774-3270 for more information.

Central Michigan University vs. VCU field hockey game — Friday

Teaching and Learning Collective social and book discussion — Friday

Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences’ Teaching and Learning Collective will host a social and book discussion about Barbara Oakley’s “A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel at Math and Science (Even if You Flunked Algebra)?” at 3:30 p.m. in Park Library’s Strosacker Room. Game-based Learning in K-University workshop — registration deadline is Friday

Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences’ Institute of Simulations and Games will host a free, day-long workshop on game-based learning from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Bovee University Center's Mackinaw Room. United Way VIP Tailgate — Saturday

United Way of Isabella County will host a free VIP Tailgate to celebrate its 60th anniversary at 9 a.m. Saturday near the athletic facilities by Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The public is invited to attend a complimentary brunch buffet. Contact Tom Olver at 989-773-9863 for more information.

CMU and You Day — Saturday

Central Michigan University will host CMU and You Day at 9 a.m. Saturday for prospective high school students and their families to explore academic programs, tour campus and discover everything CMU has to offer. Contact the Undergraduate Admissions office at 989-774-3076 to register for this free event.

Tailgate Central — Saturday

Central Michigan University’s University Recreation invites Chippewa fans to an alcohol-free “Tailgate Central” at 10 a.m. Saturday outside the CMU Events Center. Come enjoy food, games and giveaways. Contact Jennifer Nottingham at 989-774-3686 for more information.

Central Michigan University vs. Syracuse football game — Saturday

"Petticoat Patriots: How Michigan Women Won the Vote" exhibit— begins Monday

Central Michigan University’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences invites the public to explore a free exhibit, “Petticoat Patriots: How Michigan Women Won the Vote,” at 8 a.m. Monday on the first floor of Anspach Hall. Contact Tim Hall at 989-774-3341 for more information. The exhibit will be open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays through Nov. 4.

Multicultural Academic Student Services presentation — Monday

Central Michigan University’s Multicultural Academic Student Services office will host guest speaker Michael Reyes at 7 p.m. Monday in the Bovee University Center Auditorium. Reyes will give a talk titled “Mexican/Chican@ Identity and History Through Spoken Word.” Contact D’Wayne Jenkins at 989-774-3945 for more information.

Pinterest Party: Chippewa Style — Monday

Central Michigan University’s Program Board will host a “Chippewa Style” Pinterest party at 7 p.m. Monday in the Bovee University Center’s Terrace Room A. This free event will provide CMU-themed, budget-friendly decorating ideas for furnishing residence hall rooms and apartments.

Multicultural Academic Student Services movie — Tuesday

Central Michigan University’s Multicultural Academic Student Services office will host a free movie showing to celebrate the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bovee University Center Room 108. Contact D’Wayne Jenkins at 989-774-3945 for more information.

Faculty artist Latoya Lain concert — Tuesday

Central Michigan University’s School of Music professor and mezzo-soprano Latoya Lain will present a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Music Building’s Staples Family Concert Hall. Call 989-774-3000 to purchase tickets.

Biosciences Building groundbreaking ceremony — Wednesday

The Trustees of Central Michigan University, President George E. Ross, Dean Ian Davison, and the College of Science and Technology invite the community to the groundbreaking ceremony for the new $95 million Biosciences Building on the campus of CMU at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday near the Engineering and Technology Building. New Venture Competition workshop — Wednesday

The College of Business Administration at Central Michigan University will host a Concept Crafting workshop about the 2015 CMU New Venture Competition at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Grawn Hall 150. Contact Brenda Pung at 989-774-3270 for more information.

Study Abroad Fair — Wednesday

Central Michigan University’s Study Abroad office will host a Study Abroad Fair at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Bovee University Center Rotunda. Everyone is invited to learn about program opportunities and meet students who have recently returned from studying abroad. Contact Sarah Barnard at 989-774-4308 for more information.

Department of Art and Design faculty exhibition — through Sept. 27

Central Michigan University’s Department of Art and Design will host a free exhibit showcasing the works of professors Clarke, Dominguez, Gochenour, Kendall, Rose, Russell, Stahly, Stairs and Wildey from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays in the University Art Gallery. The exhibit will be open through Sept. 27.
