Central Michigan University’s Office of Alumni Relations has named Grammy award-winning musician Andrew Dost as the 2014 Homecoming Grand Marshal. A Frankfort native, Dost will be honored at a number of events as alumni return to campus the weekend of Oct. 4.
“I was extremely flattered and proud to be asked,” Dost said. “It’s not really something I ever expected, but it’s really touching to be welcomed back in this way by a place that has been so important to me.”
Dost is keyboardist in the Grammy award-winning band fun. The group’s hit song “We Are Young” spent six consecutive weeks atop Billboard’s “Hot 100” and set singles sales records. Other recent hits include “Some Nights” and “Carry On.” Among fun.’s many high-profile performances, the band will perform June 18 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
While studying at CMU, Dost was a Centralis Scholar and Honors Program student. He graduated in 2005 with a degree in journalism.
“This is our opportunity to recognize and honor Andrew and his successes since graduating from CMU,” said Marcie Otteman, executive director of alumni relations. “His music connects with current students and alumni alike, so for Homecoming it’s really great to have someone who reaches across several generations. Plus, it’s so neat that his parents also are CMU alumni.”
Dost’s parents, Mark Dost and Cheryl (Kozan) Dost of Frankfort, graduated from CMU in 1979 and 1978, respectively.
“My parents and I speak very fondly of our time at CMU, and it’ll be great to be back there,” Dost said. “I’m really looking forward to just walking around campus. It’s so beautiful in the fall.”
