Central Michigan University will enjoy a new dance experience this month as Jump Rhythm Jazz Project takes the stage. The Emmy Award-winning Chicago-based company will visit CMU’s campus for a week of lectures, dance classes and performances.

“This is a great opportunity for the CMU community to study with one of the innovators of jazz dance,” said Heather Trommer-Beardslee, dance program coordinator and artistic director of University Theatre Dance Company.

Jump Rhythm Jazz Project combines dancing, singing and storytelling with blues, jazz, funk, hip-hop and world music to create rhythmically syncopated conversations. Founded in New York City by Billy Siegenfeld in 1990, Jump Rhythm Jazz Project began as a series of song-and-dance duets choreographed and vocally arranged to a live jazz combo playing sounds of the 1920s, 30s and 40s.

The company, now expanded into an ensemble of performers and teachers, will perform and teach at CMU from March 18 through 22. The week of events includes a showing of the Emmy Award-winning documentary “Getting There: Jump Rhythm Jazz Project,” a lecture with creator and artistic director Billy Siegenfeld, and free dance classes for students and the community. Jump Rhythm Jazz Project will end the week with a live concert Saturday, March 22.

“Having this Emmy Award-winning dance company on campus is going to be an exciting experience for everyone involved,” Trommer-Beardslee said. “We strongly encourage students and the community to take advantage of all the events offered.”

The documentary, lecture and dance classes are free for students, faculty, staff and the Mount Pleasant community. Participants may register for the dance classes by emailing Heather Trommer-Beardslee. Tickets for the concert are available through Ticket Central, online here or by calling 989-774-3045. Cost is $10 for students/seniors and $18 for the general public.

Jump Rhythm Jazz Project is sponsored by the Central Michigan University’s Provost’s Office, University Theatre, communication and dramatic arts department, and the College of Communication and Fine Arts.
