Search begins for CMU’s next chief diversity officer

The search for Central Michigan University's next vice president and chief diversity officer is underway, led by committee co-chairs Senior Vice Provost Julia Johnson and Interim Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer Stan Shingles.

The vice president and chief diversity officer will play a key role in advancing CMU's goal to become a more inclusive institution. The person selected for the position will develop and implement a plan to further a diverse, inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. 

Search firm DHR International will assist in the nationwide search. Other committee members are: 

  • Miracle Berry, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force and Student Government Association member.
  • Ahsha Davis, graduate student.
  • Jennifer DeHaemers, vice president, student recruitment and retention.
  • Laura Gonzales, community member.
  • Eltaro Hooper, civil rights and Title IX investigator, Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity.
  • Anne Hornak, faculty, educational leadership.
  • Melanie Dawn Nelson, faculty, communication sciences and disorders.
  • Brett Houle, former vice president, Student Government Association.
  • Alejandra Rengifo, faculty, world languages and cultures.
  • Erik Rodriguez, public relations manager, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
  • Alan Rudy, faculty, sociology, anthropology and social work.
  • Alejandro Salais, undergraduate student.
  • James Span Jr., director, Multicultural Academic Student Services.

President Bob Davies appointed Shingles to serve as interim vice president and chief diversity officer, after A.T. Miller stepped down from the role in late August.
