Construction checklist complete

Flood can’t wash out more than 50 major summer projects

Don't let all the talk of flood recovery at Central Michigan University this summer fool you.

Construction crews still had more than 50 scheduled projects to complete before the Aug. 28 start of classes.

Mission accomplished.

"Despite the storm impacts, all routine, planned construction work for this summer was substantially complete as scheduled," said Jonathan Webb, associate vice president of facilities management.

Improving campus safety and access

At first glance, the renovation and expansion of Grawn Hall (stay tuned to CMU News for an engaging look into this phenomenal facility!) and the upgrading of the Writing Center and Math Assistance Center in Park Library as part of its master plan are the most noticeable of the summer projects.

But enhancing campus safety and making facilities more accessible for students with disabilities also was a primary focus of the major projects.

New classroom and auditorium locks and door closures were installed in Moore, Powers and Anspach halls as well as the College of Medicine, Health Professions, Education and Human Services, and Engineering and Technology buildings.

Also on the list was managing access to the Towers residence hall complex. This included installing security and safety card access controls that limit building access to only students living within each hall.

And to help keep the campus community safer at night, 40 new light poles were added and 10 light poles replaced to improve lighting on campus.

Regular upgrades and upkeep

So what else kept crews so busy this summer and will continue into this fall? Take a look.

  • Look up — Crews re-roofed Finch Fieldhouse, Brooks Hall and the Bovee University Center dome.
  • Look down —The university repaired or replaced more than two miles of sidewalks, and crews fixed the cracks in 17 campus parking lots.
  • Look forward — Crews will finalize the minor tasks like installing new doors and some furnishings that were on back order this summer.
