Students, faculty and staff gathered Wednesday afternoon in Plachta Auditorium for the release of recommendations and highlights from an upcoming report on Central Michigan University's diversity and inclusion assessment.

"It is our hope that all of you here today and your peers continue to be involved in shaping our future, upholding the values of this institution, and respecting and taking care of one another," CMU President George E. Ross said during the event.

The report is the culmination of focus groups and interviews with stakeholders across the university last spring and this fall, as well as an online survey of the entire CMU community earlier this semester. About 2,700 students, faculty and staff participated in the process.

The findings show that while many have seen strides in diversity and inclusion at CMU, further work and gains are needed. Recommendations include changes to programming, suggestions for collaboration and communication, and additional possible funds for diversity and inclusion.

Ross soon will appoint an equity and inclusion recommendation team to review the report in detail and determine next steps. The group also will consider additional input from students, faculty and staff.

CMU hired The Barthwell Group to complete the assessment on behalf of the university. The firm coordinated with four university liaisons to connect with the CMU community and gather the history of programming, materials, services and previous research results.

The firm's recommendations will post to the diversity and inclusion assessment results page today. The full report, which is still being finalized, will be added to the page next week. A recording of the event live stream also will be made available on the results page this Friday. In addition to resources from the town hall, the assessment pages include an email address to submit comments on the recommendations and information about the assessment process.
