About the Photo Contest

Entries will be evaluated by a team of judges from across campus (the Office of Study Abroad staff do not judge photos) and prizes will be awarded to the top entries in each of the two categories: CMU Abroad, and People & Places.  To enter, please read the rules of the contest below, complete the entry form, and return it with your photos to the Office of Study Abroad no later than the deadline above.  



Categories

  • CMU ABROADphotos must include the entrant and/or other CMU students in the host country and should portray the essence of the entrant’s study abroad experience.  It is NOT required to wear CMU apparel.
  • PEOPLE & PLACES photos should be of a landmark, landscape or people in the host country that are clearly identifiable as an international location These photos do not have to have a CMU student in the picture.

 Rules of the Contest

  1. Entrants must have participated in a CMU study abroad program.
  2. Photos must be original work (no professional photos will be accepted). 
  3. Photos may be color or black and white.
  4. Photos must be submitted in print and must be accompanied by the entry form.
    1. Prints must be 4” x 6” (larger than 4” x 6” will not be accepted), printed on photo paper, and will not be returned.
    2. We often use photos for digital media and would also welcome a digital copy of your entry (a print copy is still required). Digital photos should be submitted in as large a file format as possible (preferably JPEG file format) and may be emailed to oie.studyabroad@gmail.com
  5. A maximum of two photos per category may be submitted per entrant.  Students may submit additional photos to the Office of Study Abroad for use in publications, but must clearly identify which photos are being submitted for the contest.
  6. A completed official entry form must accompany the entry.
  7. Please attach a label to the back of each photo and include the following (do not use markers as they may smear on your photos):
    1. Entrant’s name
    2. Location of the photo (be as specific as possible)
    3. Identification of any people in the photo (be sure that you have permission from your subject(s) to submit the photo)
  8. For digital submissions, please save each photo with your name and the photo’s title.  Please include the above information in your email.
  9. Entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at the Office of Study Abroad, Ronan 330.

 

Entries received after the deadline will not be eligible – be sure to allow plenty of time if submitting entries via mail.


Awards

  •  Winners will be notified by e-mail and/or phone in late September or early October and photos will be officially displayed at events throughout the academic year.  
  • Only one prize per entrant will be awarded.
  • Judges’ decisions are final.

 

ALL photos (both winners and non-winners) will become the property of the Office Study Abroad and will not be returned. Be sure to make copies!  


Quick Tips …

Originality counts!

Be sure to title your photo – creative titles may help an entry standout – but be sure to keep it short.

Photos that involve students and locals are usually highly regarded by the judges.

While it’s not a requirement to win the contest, photos with students wearing CMU apparel tend to get used more in our publications and/or publicity for the Office of Study Abroad.
