Delivery Formats

DiscoverDiscover

At CMU, our defined instructional delivery formats include:

  • Face-to-face: Courses meet in a physical classroom on the main CMU campus or at another CMU satellite location. Formalized instruction consists of a specified number of face-to-face class hours for every specified hour of course credit.
  • Online: Courses do not include any face-to-face meetings in a physical classroom and all formalized instruction and coursework is completed online.
    • Online Asynchronous: Courses do not require any real-time face-to-face class meetings, whether in a physical classroom or virtually. If proctored exams are required, that fact is noted in the course registration system.
    • Online Synchronous: Courses do not require any face-to-face class meetings in a physical classroom, though they do require learners to participate in virtual class meetings online at specified dates and times as noted in the course registration system. If proctored exams are required, that fact is noted in the course registration system.
  • Hybrid/Blended: “Hybrid” or “Blended” are names used to describe courses that meet some of the time in a physical classroom and the rest of the instruction and coursework are completed online synchronously and/or asynchronously. Dates and times for face-to-face meetings and synchronous online activities must be defined prior to the start of the course and noted in the course registration system.
While course definitions provide general structural guidance, the rich diversity of course design and delivery pathways can be challenging to navigate. We encourage you to take a moment and examine your interests and/or course needs – and then map accordingly to the following sets of resources.
