​​​​​There are numerous resources for information, health, safety, travel and transportation while you're abroad. We encourage you to research and learn about your host country, travel plans and staying healthy while you're there.


  • U.S. State Department provides information for U.S. citizens traveling abroad about the destination country:
  • Stay Safe!  on the CMU Police website offers safety tips and safety videos.  The Stay Safe! Information will provide valuable information while on campus and abroad.
  • It is important that each student take responsibility for his/her own safety by staying informed and making wise decisions.

Laptop/Technology Safety

It has been widely publicized that laptops and cell phones can easily be hacked, especially when using public WiFi.  Read the FBI WiFi Security Advice to protect yourself.


  • CMU's Travel Health Clinic can assess travelers' health needs based on their health history and the country to which they will travel. Immunizations are  administered, typically at a more affordable cost than off campus.  All students studying or traveling abroad are encouraged to visit the CMU Travel Health Clinic.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides online health information, including country-specific travel health and immunization information.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) produces a report with information about main health risks for travelers by country.
  • offers an online Travel Health Clinic Locator and provides useful information regarding health risks, vaccinations and other travel health-related resources.
  • Physical and dental exam.  As a precaution, it is recommended that all students have a physical and a dental exam prior to departure. Students who are on medication should request that the prescription be filled for the entire study abroad period. Students who may need medical care while abroad should inform the CMU study abroad staff in advance. 
  • Study abroad insurance.  All students are required to have health, medical evacuation and repatriation insurance when studying abroad. CMU provides a policy for students through GEO Blue.

Airfare and Train Information

  • STA Travel is a worldwide travel agency that works exclusively with students.  Be sure to check their BOOK NOW, PAY LATER program that allows students to pay as little as $49 for a flight deposit.
  • Student Universe is a travel agency that offers flights with student discounts.
  • Eurail Passes offers a variety of rail ticket passes to travel in 28 countries in Europe that can be used for travel throughout Europe (exception: the United Kingdom).
  • Britrail Passes provide international visitors to the United Kingdom to travel by train throughout Britain.

Travel Information

  • Passports are issued by the U.S. State Department to U.S. citizens.  Applications may be downloaded on this site and submitted to your local passport office. 
  • Visas are the permission of a foreign government to enter the country.  Certain countries do not require that students or visitors apply in advance for a visa, but other countries do.  To learn if a visa is required to enter your host country, search the internet for website of the nearest embassy or consulate (many countries have a consulate in Chicago or Detroit; all embassies are in Washington, D.C.).  Instructions for applying for a visa will be found on the webpage.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection provide information regarding regulations when traveling to and from the United States.
  • Transportation Security Administration  provides current information on regulations and restrictions on transportation, including air travel.
  • International Student Identification Card (ISIC) is a student identity card that provides discounts around the world.
  • Youth Hostels International is an organization providing low-cost accommodations to travelers around the world.
  • FBI Background Checks are required in order to receive a visa from some countries.
