Robert Newby Diversity Research Award Information

Screen Shot 2017-10-16 at 3.48.36 PM.pngThe Multicultural Diversity Education Committee invites you to participate in this year's Robert Newby Fund to support Student Diversity Efforts.  This award will be given to up to four students at Central Michigan University for their outstanding applications and research work on both the graduate and undergraduate level.

As a recipient of the award, these students will present at the Student Research and Creative Endeavors Exhibition (SRCEE) normally held each year in April.

The Award Recipients for teh 2016-2017 are listed below.  

Shanti Brown 

Shanti is a second year Graduate Student at Central Michigan University, studying to obtain her Ph.D. in School Psychology. Her work entitled "Barriers to Achievement for English Language Learners" was selected. In the future, she would love to work in a school district to help students, teachers, administrators, and parents promote a positive and effective learning environment for all students. She is passionate about bringing a more inclusive and diverse research atmosphere to CMU because as a developing service professional, she believes that promoting diversity and an appreciation of culture is particularly important. She feels that it is necessary for institutions of higher education to become leaders in creating an inclusive and comprehensive learning and research environment. 

Rebecca Gillespe

Rebecca is a senior at Central Michigan University, studying to obtain her Bachelors degree, majoring in Exercise Science: Kinesiology. Her work entitled "Ageism: Society's View on Age" was selected. In the future, she would like to continue on to graduate school for her Doctorate in Physical Therapy, with a goal of working in a nursing home and with in-home care parents to practice physical therapy. She is passionate about bringing a more inclusive and diverse research atmosphere to CMU because she feels that no matter what field or discipline people choose to pursue, they will always be faced with diversity. Rebecca believes CMU as a safe environment for exploring more diverse opportunities, and diversity research becomes a good first step in entering the "real world" post graduation. 

Celeste Hay 

Celeste is a senior at Central Michigan University, studying to obtain her Bachelors degree, double majoring in Fashion Design and French. Her work entitled "Skin Tones" was selected. In the future, she would like to go to France to teach English for a year and then begin a master's program for creative fashion design the following year. In the long term, she would like to obtain her Ph.D. and become a professor that teaches about fashion design. She is passionate about building a more diverse scholarly environment at CMU because diversity and inclusion do not live in isolation, and they are therefore everyone's issues to understand, promote, and work toward. Design, for her, is a way of interpreting the world and communication her thoughts through visual and tangible mediums. In this way, "Skin Tones" looks at historical, contemporary, and personal relationships surrounding multiracial identities, helping people to connect and discuss race in a new and important way. 

Miranda Nouhan

Miranda is a senior at Central Michigan University, studying to obtain her Bachelors, double majoring in Elementary Education and Mathematics. She is also minoring in Language Arts. Her work entitled "Something Isn't Adding Up: College Students' Perceptions of Mathematicians" was selected. She will be student teaching in Fall, 2017. In the future, she would like to teach third grade students and pursue other degrees in Education and Administration. She is passionate about bringing a more inclusive and diverse research atmosphere to CMU because as a woman involved in mathematics, she understands that there are disparities in particular fields for certain individuals. She is passionate about including diverse research because she believes CMU needs to be able to encourage and educate students on these matters. While her profession is education focused, diversity and inclusion are pertinent to every profession. She hopes that CMU invests in researching inclusion and diversity further, as it is critical to fields associated with people.
