MCC College Access Initiative

access%20volunteers"College students hold a unique position on campuses and in their communities; they are gatherers, disseminators, activists and organizers, and role models for those who aspire to attend college." (A Guide to College Access and the College Positive Volunteer, Romano and Parise, Massachusetts Campus Compact, 2007.)

The CMU GEAR UP/CD program, the Volunteer Center and Michigan Campus Compact are working collaboratively to train CMU student volunteer mentors each semester to create greater access to college and promote success of Michigan youth. CMU mentors work with GEAR UP Flint youth sharing insights on how to prepare for college while in middle and high school. The goal of the mentoring process and campus visits is to help develop a college-bound identity that leads to increased confidence through:

  • Career choices
  • ACT preparation
  • Admission processes
  • Applying for financial aid
