The Central Michigan University Upward Bound was honored to hold its first Lady Elegance Event on Wednesday, March 26th, 2014. This community service event offered free gowns to the Junior Reserve Officer Training Core ladies at Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School. The ladies will attend a Military Ball in May.
On the day of the event, 10 students showed up to participate with 2 returning on later dates because they were unable to attend the first date. The students were greeted and given the schedule of events for the day. They had refreshments while participating in a discussion about confidence, self-esteem and being a young lady in today's society. They also crafted a picture frame for a picture of themselves at the Military Ball. Upward Bound staff members acted as personal shoppers to help the ladies choose an appropriate, well-fitted dress with a matching shawl. We presented the young ladies with gift bags of cosmetic items as they left the event.
Our goal was for each student participant to leave the event with confidence, a beautiful self-crafted picture frame, refreshments, companionship with their peers, and a gown and shawl. We were successful at completing this task for these 12 young ladies!
Comments from Lady Elegance participants:
