Information Technology offers a secure Instant Messaging (IM) service for use throughout the university. Unlike the various public IM services such as AIM, MSN, and Yahoo, CMU's IM service is local to the university and does not allow unencrypted communications. Although any number of clients may be used, the OIT Help Desk supports Spark, a cross-platform IM client for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Staff machines may install Spark directly from Configuration Manager (formerly SMS). Others may download Spark from the OIT Downloads page.
