Wireless - Windows XP Configuration

Prior to connecting to wireless, ensure that Windows is set to manage your wireless connections:

NOTE: It may be necessary to disable any third-party wireless utilities before beginning.

  1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon (you may have to switch to Classic View within the Control Panel to see this option).
  3. Right-click on the wireless connection and click Properties.
  4. Click on the Wireless Networks tab and check the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings option, then click the OK button.

Configuring cmich_open (unsecured)

  1. Click the Start button, then Connect To, and then Wireless Network Connection.
  2. Select cmich_open from the list of available wireless networks and click the Connect button.
  3. After a few seconds, Windows should notify you that you are connected to the wireless network.
  4. Open a web browser (eg. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc..), you should be directed to the login website. Login with your Global ID and password.

NOTE: It may take a minute or two to get a fully established connection.


Configuring Cmich GOLD (WPA2 secured)

  1. Click the Start button and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Network Connections icon (you may have to switch to Classic View within the Control Panel to see this option).
  3. Right-click on the wireless connection and click Properties.
  4. Click the Wireless Networks tab, then click the Add button.
  5. Under the Association tab, enter or select the following information in the highlighted fields:
    • Network name (SSID): Cmich GOLD
    • Network Authentication: WPA2
    • Data encryption: AES
      NOTE: If WPA2 is not listed as an option in the drop down menu, you may need to upgrade your wireless network card driver and/or run Windows Updates.
  6. On the same properties window, click the Authentication tab. Ensure that the EAP type is set to Protected EAP (PEAP).
  7. Click the Properties button.
  8. Uncheck the Validate server certificate option.
  9. Change Select Authentication Method to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
  10. Finally, click the Configure button.
  11. Uncheck the Automatically use my windows logon name and password option, and then click OK to close any remaining open windows.
  12. You will see a yellow balloon pop up from the network connection icon in the tray. Click anywhere on this balloon, besides the X in the corner.
  13. You will then be prompted to enter your logon credentials:
    • User name: your CMU Global ID
    • Password: your CMU Global ID password
    • Logon domain: CENTRAL
  14. Click the OK button. You will now be connected to the Cmich GOLD wireless network.

Configuring cmich (WPA secured)

The cmich SSID will be phased out in the near future. Please follow the directions above to configure 'Cmich GOLD'. If the 'cmich' wireless network needs to be configured on your machine, please contact the Help Desk for instructions.
