LISTSERV

Why, when I send a message to a list that I belong to, does it say I cannot send to the list?

Because the address you have set in your MUA's preferences does not match the address that you are signed up to the list with. For example, say you signed up for the list with your preferences set to Mary.Jones@mail.cmich.edu but have since found out that IT recommends you use the more generic cmich.edu nodename so you changed your preferences to Mary.Jones@cmich.edu - to LISTSERV those are two different addresses.

Why does LISTSERV say I don't own a list that I know I do own?

Because the address you have set in your MUA's preferences does not match the address that you are signed up to the list with. For example, say you signed up for the list with your preferences set to John.Doe@mail.cmich.edu but have since found out that IT recommends you use the more generic cmich.edu nodename so you changed your preferences to John.Doe@cmich.edu - to LISTSERV those are two different addresses.

How do I subscribe to a list?

For example, perhaps you are interested in the pollen levels in Sweden. You were previously subscribed to the following list with your old email address.

POLLEN-SWEDEN@ NIC.MUSEUM.ORG

The list name is pollen-sweden (above in green); the host name is nic.museum.org (in red).

To subscribe to the list, you would simply mail a message to LISTSERV@NIC.MUSEUM.ORG

In the body of the message, simply include the following line:

subscribe name-of-list first-name last-name

where name-of-list is the name of the list you are subscribed to, first-name is your first name, and last-name is your last name.

Continuing with the example above, if Jane M. Doe wanted to subscribe to the pollen-sweden list, she would need to address an email message to LISTSERV@NIC.MUSEUM.ORG as shown above. Then in the body of the message you would simply type:

subscribe pollen-sweden Jane Doe

When you click send, it will send the subscribe command to the host. You should then be added to the list.

How do I unsubscribe from a list?

You can unsubscribe from a LISTSERV list simply by mailing a message to the particular Listserv server. You can identify the name of the server by looking a message from the list. Typically, you can find the list name and the host name in the "From" or "To" sections of the email message. Because you do not want to send a message to the whole list, but rather the host, you should send the email message to LISTSERV@ -- where is the actual host name.

For example, let's say you are subscribed to the following list, which provides information about pollen levels in Sweden:

POLLEN-SWEDEN@ NIC.MUSEUM.ORG

The list name is pollen-sweden (above in green); the host name is nic.museum.org (in red).

To unsubscribe from the list, simply mail a message to LISTSERV@NIC.MUSEUM.ORG

In the body of the message, include the line:

unsubscribe name-of-list

where name-of-list is the name of the list you are subscribed to.

Continuing with the example above, to unsubscribe from the pollen-sweden list, send an email message to LISTSERV@NIC.MUSEUM.ORG as shown above. In the body of the message, type:

unsubscribe pollen-sweden

When you click "Send", the unsubscribe command is sent to the host. You should then be removed from the list.
