In order to maintain security and provide a stable networking environment, CMU requires all network devices be registered to your personal Global ID. In addition, CMU requires all Windows-based computers to pass a series of security checks before they are allowed to access the campus network.
To avoid any potential delays, it is highly encouraged that you try to register your computer yourself. The network registration process is designed to be simple and accomplished in just a few easy steps:
- Prepare your Windows-based computer
- Connect to the CMU network
- Open your web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.), and try navigating to a website (e.g. centrallink.cmich.edu or google.com)
- Use your Global ID to register your computer and run the Client Security Agent by following the on-screen instructions
Network registration is still required for computers running other operating systems (such as Macs), and other network devices (such as game consoles), but it is not necessary to run or pass the Client Security Agent check.
Recommended: Early computer registration (test your computer from home)
You can test your computer from home to see if it will pass the security and registration process BEFORE you arrive on campus by going to
http://reg.cmich.edu. Your Global ID and password will be necessary to successfully complete this test.
Preparing your Windows-based computer
Following these instructions, either from home or when you arrive on campus, will help you prepare your computer to pass the initial network registration security check:
- Run Windows update
To update your Windows operating system:
Click on the Start Menu, go to All Programs, select Windows Update.
Open your Internet Explorer browser, click on “Tools” in the menu bar, and select “Windows Update”.
- Install/update anti-virus software
If you already have an anti-virus software package installed on your computer, you'll need to make sure it has been updated with the latest anti-virus definition files.
If you currently lack an anti-virus software package, or the software you have installed on your computer has expired, CMU recommends Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free to download and use on your personal computer. For more information, please review the installation instructions below. Remember to uninstall any other anti-virus software you may have installed before installing Microsoft Security Essentials! During the installation process, you will be prompted to update Security Essentials, ensuring you have the most up-to-date protection against viruses and other security threats.
Connecting to the CMU network
There are three possible options for connecting your computer to the CMU network:
Generally, this provides the fastest and most reliable connection speeds, especially for initial network registration, but it does require an Ethernet cable. Ethernet cables are available for purchase at the Help Desk or local department stores.
- The secure (encrypted) "Cmich GOLD" wireless network
This is a more convenient option long-term, but it does require some upfront configuration before you can initially connect. A utility is available in the Software Download Center that automatically configures this connection on Windows 7 computers. Instructions for manual configuration are available for other computer operating systems as well.
- The unsecure (unencrypted) "cmich_open" wireless network
This is the most convenient wireless option for a short-term connection, until you can configure your computer for a connection to Cmich GOLD. While it does not require any upfront configuration before you can initially connect, it will require you to sign in with your Global ID each time you do. Unlike Cmich GOLD, connections to cmich_open are not encrypted, though information transferred over certain websites that utilize the HTTPS protocol is still secure (generally, these pages are denoted with a "padlock" icon in your web browser).
Please note, there are a variety of factors that can impact wireless network speed, availability, and signal strength. To limit potential interference, the unauthorized use of routers, switches, modems, wireless access points, and other devices that can impact the security and stability of the network is strictly prohibited. Other Computer Operating Systems (Macs, Linux, etc.)
Macs and other computers that are not running a Windows Operating System (OS) will not be prompted to run the same security checks required for Windows OS computers. However, they will still need to be registered on the CMU network with your Global ID and password.
Other network devices (game consoles, e-book readers, etc.)
In addition to desktop and laptop computers, you may have other devices that are capable of network access. Like computers, these devices must be formally registered on the CMU network, but they may lack the web browser necessary for you to register them on your own. These devices may include game consoles (Xbox, Playstation, etc.), smart phones, e-book readers (Kindle, Nook, etc.), among others. For assistance registering these devices, contact the Help Desk
