Q: Why am I having trouble logging on to Cayuse?

A: Start by checking your Internet browser. Cayuse works best with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Browsers such as Google Chrome and Apple Safari do not support Cayuse.

When Cayuse asks you to identify yourself, use your CMU global log-in and your CMU password.


Q: Why are so many sections of the proposal left blank in Cayuse?

A: In many cases, a proposal is being routed in Cayuse, but will be submitted via other means. For those proposals, all of the pertinent information is contained in the "Documents" tab of Cayuse (budget, transmittal, summary, and so on).

Also, many proposals begin the routing process before the final proposal is ready to be submitted. You may be asked to provide your approval of a proposal that is not completed, and your decision will be based on the materials in the "Documents" tab.


Q. Which types of proposals are submitted through Cayuse?

A: Currently, CMU proposals to the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health are the most common types submitted through Cayuse. Cayuse interfaces directly with NSF's Fastlane system and the NIH Commons to create an instantaneous submission.


Q: What is the Cayuse "routing" process?

A: The routing process is the collection of electronic "signatures" on a proposed grant submission. The typical routing chain includes the PI, co-PI's, and key personnel that are mentioned in the proposal; the Department Chairs and College Deans responsible for each of those faculty and staff; the ORGS Program Officer associated with the grant; and the Vice Provost for Research.

Cayuse routing is sequential, which means a person cannot provide his or her approval until the person listed above has approved the proposal (indicated by checking the box next to one's name).


Q: My information is not correct on Cayuse; may I change it?

A: Yes, faculty members are encouraged to update their information on the People tab of Cayuse. For example, if your campus address or phone number has changed, you can go into Cayuse and update that at any time. Also, if you see missing information -- such as Academic Degree, Year Earned, or NIH ID -- you are encouraged to fill in those spots, as this helps to ensure the accuracy of Cayuse proposals. 


Q: The proposal I need to access is "locked" by another user. What do I do?

A: Commonly, proposals appear to be "locked" because the previous user has failed to sign out. All Cayuse users are able to "break" locks at any time. However, before taking this step, it is advisable to contact the person who is identified as the current user and ask him or her if they are indeed finished with the proposal. A quick email or phone call can accomplish this.

To break the lock, click the "R" symbol ("R" stands for "Read-Only") to open the proposal. Once the proposal is open, click on the "lock" icon. When the system asks if you would like to "take the lock", answer "Yes."
