​Dr. MIchael A. Gealt
Executive Vice President/Provost

Michael A. Gealt leads the academic division as the executive vice president/provost. The academic division consists of the colleges of Business Administration, Arts and Media, Education & Human Services, Health Professions, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Medicine, and Science & Engineering. In addition, the division contains the offices of Academic Administration, Academic Affairs,  Research and Graduate Studies, Information Technology, and the libraries.

Gealt received his BA in Biology from Temple University and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Rutgers University. After working as a researcher in Rutgers Medical School’s Pharmacology Department and at the Fox Chase Cancer Center (Philadelphia, PA), he was appointed to the faculty in the Department of Bioscience & Biotechnology at Drexel University in 1978 and was later the Director of the School of Environmental Science, Engineering and Policy at Drexel. In 2000 he became dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science at Purdue University Calumet (Hammond, IN) and in January 2006 he was appointed as dean of the College of Science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). 

Gealt’s research has been primarily in the area of environmental microbiology, with emphasis on bacterial gene transfer in natural environments and on biodegradation of toxic chemicals. He served as the Chair of the American Society for Microbiology Division of Environmental and General Applied Microbiology in 1994-95 and was a Foundation for Microbiology Lecturer for 1993-95. He is a fellow of the American Academy for Microbiology.

 He has also been involved with the promotion of education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines, having served as Chair of the Arkansas STEM Coalition and as a leader in the efforts to bring a UTeach program to UALR for the training of secondary school teachers in science and mathematics. Gealt currently serves on the executive committee of the EAST Initiative (Little Rock, AR), an organization that supports STEM education in over 200 K-12 schools using geospatial technology to drive student team-driven efforts in community service. In Michigan he sits on the STEM Impact Steering Committee of the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance and on the Board of Directors for CMU Medical Education Partners.
