Discussion is a very broad topic that can be done in many different ways. In the active learning context, the main goal is for students to not only be active participants but also active listeners. Two of the main things that can derail a discussion are people talking without thinking and only a few participants dominating the conversation. The fishbowl discussion modeled in the video below helps to remedy these problems as only a few can speak at a time, observers must consider what they will say by listening to others, and everyone gets to participate. Be sure to start the discussion with a good open-ended question on a topic that students have a good foundation of knowledge on.
