President's Welcome | New Faculty Orientation

Welcome to CMU

George Ross, President

George Ross, CMU President On behalf of the entire university community, I offer you a warm welcome to Central Michigan University.

Largely on the strength of its academic programs and its focus on the success of its students, CMU has become a top 100 university in the nation and the fourth largest in the state of Michigan.  With these distinctions comes a commitment from our respected faculty and dedicated staff to provide the best educational experiences possible to advance the personal ambitions and professional goals of our more than 27,000 students.

With more than 200 academic programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, specialist and doctoral levels, including several nationally recognized programs, our faculty share a commitment to teaching with a focus on engaging students in applied research, scholarship and creative activity.

CMU is a strong and growing institution with celebrated roots in teacher education, business administration, liberal arts and the sciences, as well as emerging excellence in many disciplines, including health professions, fine arts and human services.  CMU is adding to its strong foundation with a program in engineering and the establishment of a new college of medicine, which will serve the health care needs of central and northern Michigan.

Four CMU faculty members have received the prestigious Michigan Professor of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching — Mark Francek, geography; Norma Bailey, teacher education and professional development; Gary Gagnon, marketing and hospitality services administration; and Gary Dunbar, psychology.

I am confident you will build upon the foundation your colleagues have established in creating exceptional learning opportunities for CMU students, and that you will develop student/faculty relationships that shape knowledgeable, civically engaged critical thinkers who lead productive lives and enhance the overall quality of life of people throughout the state, nation and world.

As you become familiar with our campus and the Mount Pleasant community, explore the academic, entertainment, cultural and recreational opportunities that await you in the inviting and historic city of Mount Pleasant and our surrounding communities.
We are pleased that you have joined us at CMU.

- George Ross, Ph.D., President
