All CMU personnel who make hiring decisions should note that the U.S. Department of Labor has issued new rules designed to reduce barriers to employment opportunities for veterans and individuals with disabilities.
Beginning March 24, contractors with the federal government — including Central Michigan University — will be required to measure their success in recruiting and employing veterans and individuals with disabilities.
As required by the new rules, applicants will be invited to self-identify as veterans or individuals with a disability at both the pre-offer and post-offer phases of the hiring process, said Katherine Lasher, Title IX coordinator and director of CMU's Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity.
CMU also is changing its diversity statement to reflect the new rules. It now reads:
"CMU is an AA/EO institution, providing equal opportunity to all persons, including minorities, females, veterans and individuals with disabilities."
This statement will appear on job postings, the website and official university communications such as brochures.
