CMU's first web policy – a guide for CMU web contributors

CMU's web policy, first announced on April 7, has been adopted as of Oct. 1. This policy was created to provide guidance to those who contribute to CMU's web presence, to ensure that web content is accurate and current, and to encourage appropriate positioning and management of CMU websites.

The policy reflects current CMU web practice and formalizes the rules and guidelines put in place during Web Evolution 2013. It was developed by the Web Governance Council in consultation with the Faculty Technology Advisory Committee and is structured around a combination of themes common in models currently in use at other U.S. higher education institutions.

The final version differs slightly from the April draft that was shared with the campus community for review. Revisions, based on campus feedback, include:

  • Removal of the requirement that affiliated sites adhere to the CMU Web Style Guide
  • Clarification of responsibilities in the Content and Copyright and Oversight sections
  • Inclusion of contact information for the Web Governance Council
  • Addition of links to the CMU Web Style Guide and CMU Social Media Guidelines

The complete policy is available at Please note that the policy applies to affiliate and personal websites in addition to CMU's official sites (, and CentralLink).
