Biography

Dr. Cirocco, graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, completed General Surgery Residency at St. John Hospital and Colorectal Surgery (CRS) Residency at St. Vincent Health Center. He started his career in academia in New York City (SUNY-Downstate Medical Center) involved in early attempts at preoperative staging of rectal cancer using transrectal ultrasound, guiding multidisciplinary neoadjuvant management, combined with Total Mesorectal Excision (TME), resulting in improved surgical outcomes: cancer survival and sphincter preservation (colostomy avoidance). He returned to the Midwest (Kansas City, Detroit, Columbus) and published a personal series with outcomes comparable to tertiary care centers and multi-institution trials (ACOSOG Z6051). He created the ACGME-accredited CRS Residency at Ohio State University (OSU) and served as program director for 7 years.

He is past president of 4 surgical organizations: Midwest Surgical Association (MSA), Ohio Valley Society of CRS, Southwest Society of CRS and Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is past member of the Executive Council of the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), past MSA representative to the ACS Board of Governors and past Chair of the ACS Young Fellows Association. He is an editorial board member of: The Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Techniques in Coloproctology and Diseases of the Colon and Rectum (DCR). He is a 2-time recipient of the ASCRS' Victor Fazio Award for Editorial Excellence (2007, 2022) and DCR "Star Reviewer" for 2017 through 2024. He is a Senior Examiner for the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery.
