Immerse yourself in the study of our planet and prepare to inspire the next generation to participate in a sustainable future. A minor in earth science gives you a strong foundation for a teaching career at the middle or high school level.
Why This Program & What You'll Learn
Are you passionate about science and the study of the earth? This minor offers an interdisciplinary program of coursework in earth and space sciences for students planning to teach middle and high school earth science.
Labs and field methods experiences give you hands-on exposure to real-world science inquiry. And the required courses for the minor will prepare you to teach the earth and space science content in the Michigan Curriculum Framework.
In collaborative classes, you’ll learn to identify natural materials and study their geological origin. You’ll explore the history of the earth through the rock record and discover why weather and climate vary across the surface of the earth. And you’ll investigate everything from groundwater flow to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
As an earth science student at CMU, you will:
- Customize your education with courses like Earth Processes, Landforms and Geomorphology.
- Prepare to develop creative solutions to some of today's most challenging problems.
- Build your critical thinking and problem-solving skills by learning at the intersection of multiple disciplines.
- Develop collaboration skills by working with others who have different perspectives.
