Why This Program & What You'll Learn

In today’s data-driven world, a solid understanding of key mathematics principles is more important than ever. As a math teacher at the secondary level, you can play a critical role in shaping the mathematics skills of the next generation.

Our program combines in-depth courses in key mathematics topics with practical lessons in teaching. You’ll study everything from Abstract Algebra and Discrete Structures and take a problem-based approach to geometry and statistics.

We’ll guide you through the student-teaching process, too. You’ll start by observing a class and gradually build up to taking full responsibility for a class (under the supervision of classroom teachers and university supervisors). And you’ll graduate with the skills you need to inspire a love for mathematics in your students.

Completion of the B.S. in education degree with a major in mathematics will qualify you for recommendation to the Michigan State Board of Education for a Secondary Standard Certificate.

Program Highlights

As a mathematics major for a secondary education degree, you can:

  • Customize your studies by choosing electives such as Theory of Numbers or Introduction to Point-Set Topology.
  • Apply for a scholarship designed specifically for students of mathematics.
  • Meet some of the world’s best mathematical thinkers at our annual Fleming Lecture Series.
  • Make connections and explore the field by joining Kappa Mu Epsilon, a mathematics honor society.
  • Explore new teaching environments by spending a semester abroad.
