Big opportunities with a small school feel

“CMU is large enough to have big school opportunities, but small enough to have one-on-one interactions with faculty and staff. It is great to be able to have opportunities that smaller schools may not offer, but still receive that individual consideration from professors that a person needs at this time in her life.”

Write down books recommended by your professors

“Almost every professor will recommend supplementary literature to you. Even if you are not really interested, write it down. Keep a list of every book any professor recommends, and you will walk away with the most amazing and personalized reading list you could ever imagine.”

Limitless possibilities to pursue your interests

“For almost two years, my peers in Campus Grow and I had been trying to start a farmer’s market on campus. We were getting nowhere, until we were finally contacted by a community member. He had recently started a nonprofit organization and was really interested in what we were trying to do here. We worked together to get it up and running this fall through his nonprofit Real Food Grows in association with Campus Grow. It was so exciting to see our vision finally come to life.”

Opportunities will pop up when you least expect them

“Last year I was given the opportunity to work at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort with a professor on a waste reduction and sustainability project. It was an opportunity that landed in my lap that I never thought I would have the chance to do. We spent nearly a year assessing the waste management situation at the casino before presenting it to them. My poster then won the award for Best Poster by an Undergraduate at Fate of the Earth Symposium hosted by Michigan State University’s Environmental Science and Policy Program.”

A passionate student environment awaits

“I love the student environment you are surrounded with here. Students are proactive in creating opportunities for themselves. I found a lot of passionate people here, and I am really inspired by the people I meet every day.”
