Continuing Education Units (CEU) - State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECH) Application & Instructions

  • Please complete the application to offer CEUs or SCECHs. Indicate on the application if you are applying for CEUs or SCECHs:
    • CEUs – childcare, human services, healthcare, human resources professionals
    • SCECHs – Michigan educators, administrators, and school psychologists
  • If you are applying for SCECHs, please send the application to CMU 40-45 days prior to the program start date in order to meet the Michigan Department of Education's 30 days submission deadline. This timeframe does not apply to CEU requests.
  • CEUs are determined by the number of instructional hours and then dividing that number by 10 and indicating it to the tenth decimal place. Five (5) hours of training equals .5 CEUs. Do not round up or submit partial hours; thus, 5.5 hours of training equals .5 CEUs.
  • SCECHs are determined by the number of instructional hours. Five (5) hours of training equals 5 SCECHs. Do not round up or submit partial hours; thus, 5.5 hours of training equals 5 SCECHs.
  • Applications must have a minimum of three (3) instructional hours (after breaks, meals, welcome, etc.).
  • It is recommended to build flexibility into your agenda to allow for any unexpected circumstances, i.e., bad weather, family emergency, power outage. For example, if you have 12 contact hours and are applying for 12 SCECHs (or 1.2 CEUs), it is suggested to offer a lesser amount. By doing this, participants are still able to earn SCECHs/CEUs instead of forfeiting them if they miss any part of the program or forget to sign-in and sign-out

Application

  • The agenda must show specific training subjects. It must also include break times (10-15 minutes for every 2.5 hours of instruction) and meal break(s). Full-day sessions should include a 30-60 minute lunch period.
  •  Do NOT count the welcome, breaks, lunch/dinner speeches, homework, preparation time, registration, or similar non-instructional activities.

Requirements

New Criteria: The criteria for awarding SCECHs and CEUs have changed. Instead of documenting attendance through "sign-in/out" or a "stamp-in/out," the requirement has been reduced to a one-time identification method. Additionally, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) encourages programs and professional learning opportunities to incorporate Michigan's Professional Learning Policy: Standards for Professional Learning. Programs are to be high-quality professional learning opportunities resulting in engaged learners. Programs should provide methods for engaging learners and demonstrating educator participation.
  • Program providers who wish to offer the CEUs or SCECHs must complete the application and submit it to CMU. The application will be reviewed for approval. The provider will be notified as to whether or not CEUs or SCECHs are approved for their program.
  • The Program Monitor will be responsible to verify participant attendance.
  • Participants must attend the entire program to earn CEUs or SCECHs.
  • CEUs and SCECHs are based on contact hour attendance and are on an all-or-nothing basis. They will be awarded in compliance with the approved guidelines and only the approved amount will be awarded.
  • A $35 registration fee applies to individuals who wish to earn CEUs or SCECHs. CMU will supply registration forms.
