Weather and Public-Safety Related Closures

Below is an incomplete list of occasions when Central Michigan University canceled operations due to weather, public health emergencies, or other causes. This list does not include cancelations of extra-curricular or athletics events, when the University was still operating. Please contact the Clarke if you know of any other campus cancelations.

Nov. 1 - Nov. 18, 1918	Campus closed for eighteen days due to global influenza pandemic
Dec. 1968 - Jan. 1969	Campus closed for three weeks due to influenza outbreak
Apr. 3, 1975	Classes cancelled due to winter weather
Jan. 26-27, 1978	Cancelled due to winter weather; The Great Blizzard of 1978
Mar. 4, 1985	Classes cancelled due to winter weather
Mar. 5, 1985	Classes cancelled due to power outage from lightning strike
Sept. 11-12, 15-17, 1986	Classes cancelled due to severe flooding which led to power outage
Dec. 4, 1990	Classes cancelled due to winter weather
Sept. 11, 2001	Classes were cancelled in response to terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, The Pentagon in Arlington, VA and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Spring 2008	Spring semester: Five campus-wide closures, four due to winter weather and one due to power outage

Feb. 21, 2011	Delay due to poor road conditions
Mar. 23, 2011	Classes cancelled due to winter weather
Feb. 8, 2013	University closed one day due to winter weather
Jan. 28, 2014	Cancelled due to cold
Feb. 21, 2014	University closed after 2:00 pm due to snow
Jan. 12, 2017	Delay due to winter weather
June 23, 2017	Closed due to flooding
Jan. 28, 2019	University closed after 9:00 am due to snow

Feb. 7, 2019	Cancelled due to winter weather
Spring-Summer 2020	Due to COVID-19 pandemic, all on-campus classes transitioned to online learning on March 16. Some on-campus classes resumed on June 29 (Summer II). Fall semester classes resumed on campus August 17. Most CMU employees worked remotely from March 23 through June 15, when a phased return to working on campus began. A hybrid class model was implemented in fall 2020 and used during the 2020-21 academic year.

Feb. 22-23, 2023	University closed at 4:00 pm on Feb. 22 due to winter weather and remained closed all day on Feb. 23
Feb. 27-28, 2023	University closed at 3:00 pm on Feb. 27 due to icy conditions and was delayed on Feb. 28 until 11:00 am
Jan. 12, 2024	Cancelled due to winter weather
