The transition from high school to college just got a whole lot easier for charter school students across Michigan.

Central Michigan University and The Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools have partnered on a new initiative called the Charter to CMU Guarantee, which guarantees admission to CMU for students who meet two simple criteria:

  1. Attend one of the 25 CMU-authorized charter high schools
  2. Have a 2.8 GPA or higher

“When you demystify the admissions process and are transparent for students and their families, we turn what might feel like a barrier into a bridge,” Patricia Young, director of undergraduate recruitment at CMU said.

Corey Northrop, executive director of The Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools, believes the program will streamline the admissions process and open doors to higher education for students from CMU’s charter schools.

“From their charter classrooms to CMU’s campus, we want students to see college as a real and attainable path—and to view us as a natural extension of their educational journey,” Northrop said.

As part of the Charter to CMU Guarantee, all high school seniors attending CMU-authorized schools will have their application fee waived and can apply to CMU for free – including through the Common App.

If a student has below a 2.8 GPA, they are still encouraged to apply, and their application will move through the application process for review.

CMU is making continued education more accessible for educators as well. Through CMU’s Charter Educator Tuition Program, educators at the 70 CMU-authorized charter public schools in Michigan are eligible for a 50 percent discount on the cost of tuition for select degrees.
