Finding her own connections at CMU
Abagael Suchy chose Central Michigan University for independence, community and meaningful connections
For Abagael Suchy, a sophomore majoring in human resource management from Gibraltar, Mich., choosing college meant finding the right balance between independence and connection. That combination – space to grow and a campus that still feels personal – made Central Michigan University the right fit.
“Because it was far enough away from home, I could still make my own connections. I also like the homey vibe of the small campus,” she said.
Encouraged to step forward
One of the biggest lessons she has learned is the value of putting herself out there – especially when it comes to career opportunities.
“For the career fair – a lot of professors encourage just getting your name out there,” she said.
That encouragement goes beyond general advice. She has found that faculty memebers are willing to make meaningful introductions and offer direct support.
“Certain professors or faculty members, if you talk to them about your interests and what your major is, they will actually help you out and maybe even contact people they know that could line you up for a job or an internship,” she said.
She also credits Jason Taylor, who taught her Macroeconomics course and made a lasting impression. He cared about his students and made sure his material was understood – reinforcing the supportive, student-centered learning environment she was looking for when she chose CMU.
Through those classroom experiences and conversations, Suchy has grown more confident in advocating herself and exploring new opportunities.
Memories that matter most
When she reflects on her college experience so far, it’s the people and shared experiences that stand out.
“I think about the fun memories that I have had, the many different people that I met, different learning styles and how much they helped me through my four years,” she said.
She has also developed skills that extend far beyond coursework.
Those everyday interactions – in classrooms, at events and in conversations with faculty – have shaped not only her college journey, but the way she sees her future.
With independence, encouragement, and a strong network behind her, she is creating the college experience she set out to find – one connection at a time.
