As a student who balances two majors, a leadership minor, and multiple executive roles, Hannah Beardsley, a junior human resources and dance studies double major, from Auburn Mich., has never shied away from a challenge. But studying abroad pushed her even further, introducing new perspectives, deeper confidence, and a broader vision for her future.

"Even going to the airport and flying on a plane, that was the very first time I'd ever done that," she said.

Why Barcelona? Academic fit and personal growth

Hannah chose a summer program in Barcelona, Spain, where she completed a course in international marketing through CIEE. The program offered the flexibility to travel solo while fulfilling a key HR requirement.

"Our professor had us visit different neighbourhoods to study how they attracted different audiences," she said. "We looked at what people were wearing, what kind of businesses were on the street, from Gucci to family-owned shops, and what that said about the customers."

That experience introduced her to global differences in consumer behavior but also helped her reflect on her own growth.

"Managing my time while taking a heavy course load and adjusting to a different environment was probably the hardest part," she said. "But it taught me bravery."

New environments, new strengths

The Barcelona program wasn't part of her original plan, but it became a turning point. It allowed her to connect business strategy with artistic leadership and strengthened her interest in arts administration as a career path.

Outside the classroom, Hannah navigated cultural and linguistic differences, embraced the independence of solo travel, and developed rhythms that made a new city feel familiar.

"Studying abroad helped me think more about what could go right," she said. "If I could handle that experience, I can handle a lot more than I thought."

Leadership on campus and beyond

That same mindset shows up in her day-to-day life at CMU. Hannah is president of CMU Dance Alliance, a member of the Alpha Psi Omega theater honor society, and a lead planner for the Department of Theatre and Dance's annual awards event. In between, she manages rehearsals, academic group work, and nearly 200 total credit hours across two degrees.

"I like to stay busy," she said. "But I also try to be intentional with my time. Even if I only have 10 minutes between meetings, I use that time to study or plan."

Advice for future travelers

Her advice to other students? Start with your academic goals and let that guide the rest.

"There's a program out there that fits your goals," she said. "Taking that first step is what makes it real."
