Graduate student completes internship teaching debate skills in Shanghai, China
Shae Khan, a second-year communications graduate student at Central Michigan University, traveled across the ocean to Shanghai, China, over the summer to teach the art of debate.
In July, Khan completed a six-week internship through Enreach Education. She spent two weeks shadowing debate instructors, two weeks as a “lab leader” for a children’s camp and the last two weeks teaching students.
While teaching, Khan had a major impact as the only female coach. Female students who normally sat quietly were suddenly just as engaged as the male students.
“I was surprised to learn that they never got this kind of participation from the girls with just male coaches,” Khan said. “They seemed to respond to the representation of women in the coaching staff, and I felt pretty special.”
